How can I change the favicon on SharePoint and Office 365 (v2013)?

If you want to change the favicon of your site to use your own logo instead of SharePoint icon, please proceed as follows:

  1. Open your site with SharePoint Designer
  2. Go to Site Assets
  3. Upload your new favicon.ico file
  4. Check in the file in the context menu and if asked publish the major version
  5. Depending of the theme version you are using edit your masterpage
    • Sandbox solution: go to All files > _catalogs > masterpage > THEMENAME
    • Farm solution: go to All files > _catalogs > masterpage
  6. Check out and edit the masterpage you're using
  7. Update the url to the new favicon
    • In your master page locate the tag bellow:
      <SharePoint:SPShortcutIcon runat="server" IconUrl="/_layouts/15/images/favicon.ico?rev=23" />
    • Replace it with:
      <SharePoint:SPShortcutIcon runat="server" IconUrl="/SiteAssets/favicon.ico" />
  8. Save the master
  9. Check in the file in the context menu and if asked publish the major version
  10. Refresh your site and the new favicon will appear
