Search results is not displaying the refiners

If you are using a BindTuning theme in a Collaboration site (e.g. Team Site) and if you apply a master page without side bar you will notice that the search refiners in the search results page will not be visible.

This problem is caused by the master page that does not include the area to display the refiners.

By default the search results page in SharePoint uses the master page defined for the system pages like all the collaboration sites, this means that is not possible to change the master page just for the results page.

To get back the refiners and keep the master without side bar applied to the site you will need to create an Enterprise Search site, then you need to change the default settings for the search results in the site collection.

Collaboration Site Collections

  1. Open your SharePoint root site
  2. Go to Settings > Site Contents
  3. At the bottom of the page click in the new subsite link
  4. Select the Enterprise category and then select the Enterprise Search Center template
  5. Click Create
  6. Open your new Search Site
  7. Go to Settings > Site Settings
  8. Click in the Master Page option under Look and Feel
  9. Select a master page with sidebar for the Site Master Page option and also for the System Master Page and click OK
  10. Open the root site of the site collection again
  11. Go to Settings > Site Settings
  12. Click in the Search Settings under Site Collection Administration
  13. In the Which search results page should queries be sent to? section select the Send queries to a custom results page URL and type the results page of your site e.g. http://server/sites/SearchCenter/Pages/results.aspx
  14. Click OK

Publishing Site Collections

  1. Open your SharePoint root site
  2. Go to Settings > Site Settings
  3. Click in the Master Page option under Look and Feel
  4. Select one of the master pages included with sidebar for the System Master Page and click OK

All your System Sites will display the side bar as well as the search results page. If you want to keep all system pages without the side bar applied, you can follow the process described for the Collaboration Site Collections.
